Doesn’t this all look so tasty and delicious? Woooo – hot sauce! Time for some packaging design.
The goal of this project is to create labels for 3 different types or flavors of hot sauce.
Ok, so time to brainstorm and sketch.
I liked the ideas of zig zag and blast so I tried some different visual representations for each of those concepts.
Then, I drew also some sketches on different shapes of potential hot sauce bottles…
And last, but not least – I found some inspiration that I connected with. I liked the idea of a more unexpected looking botanical shapes. I knew I could take this Jardín (Spanish word for Garden) design – and I could play around with the simple shapes and bold colors once I got them into Adobe Illustrator.
I went for it – I wanted to create a more high-end looking hot sauce, something that could be sold in a local shopping market or specialty store…
Designing labels for hot sauce has been more beautiful and fun than I would have expected.
Here are some different color mock-ups for my different labels of hot sauce.
I found a typo – gasp! It’s always good to get another set of eyes on your work – especially when you’ve been staring at it for a while. I’ll fix the typo, and I’m so glad that I caught this issue early on.
I’m also so glad that I got this color proof.
Small color tweaks can make a big difference (and colors can also vary greatly between computer screen and in print – so it’s always good to test out the look early on).
The best part is that it really helped me narrow down how I wanted to tweak these logos here and there for my final label design.
These labels are printed on a slightly coated 60 lb. paper stock. Then, I learned a cool trick recently to paste / get (non-sticky) labels to stick to glass bottles.
The trick is milk! It works wonders as a glue for packaging labels… Apparently as the milk solids are drying they get sticky and start to work as an adhesive.
I didn’t want to believe it, but it really is a nice way to get labels mounted. Dip in milk (or dunk if you need to), place the label just right, then pat away any excess liquid – and voila! You’re done.
I hope you like my hot sauce labels designs.
